Every plumber has a call-out that sticks with them. This is one of ours. It started with a phone call from a young mum in a genuine panic, and it’s stayed with us not because of what went wrong, but because of what we were able to do about it. One emergency call-out that has always stuck with me involved a young mum who called us in absolute panic because her kitchen was flooding. She had young children at home, water was spreading through the kitchen, and she had no idea where it was coming from or how to stop it. The first thing we did wasn’t grab the tools. We talked her through how to isolate the water supply over the phone so the damage couldn’t get any worse. While she was turning off the water, we reshuffled our schedule and had one of our plumbers on the way. We were on site within approximately an hour. Once we arrived, we located the source of the leak, completed the repair and documented everything with photographs and detailed notes. We also prepared a written report while we were still on site so the homeowner had everything they needed if they decided to lodge an insurance claim. For us, though, fixing the immediate problem is only part of the job. Whenever we attend an emergency, we also take the opportunity to inspect the surrounding plumbing. Quite often, the problem that caused today’s emergency isn’t the only issue developing. In this case, we identified several other plumbing components showing signs of deterioration. We explained what we had found, why those components were beginning to fail, and what the homeowner should keep an eye on moving forward. They chose to have those repairs completed while we were there, potentially preventing another emergency. We also assisted with the initial clean-up and explained the next steps, including engaging a flood restoration company to minimise any long-term damage. One thing I’ve learnt over the years is that people rarely call a plumber because they’re having a good day. They’re usually stressed and worried, looking for someone they can trust to guide them through the situation. Our job isn’t just to repair the plumbing. It’s to make the situation feel manageable, explain what’s happened in a way the customer understands, and help them make informed decisions about what comes next. If we can leave a customer feeling more confident than when we arrived, then we’ve done our job properly. That homeowner is still one of our clients today.
